In this week’s reading from the McGraw-Hill Handbook “Finding and Managing Print and Online Sources” I could follow the steps necessaries for an online research. Luckily, the FSU library’s website allows us to do so in an easy and trustful way. For the project #2 I plan on talking about a group which I am part of that is made up of female athletes and that meets up every week. There, we discuss and receive multiple advices to our lives. Based on that I decided to look for prior researches. By searching in the Academic Search Complete database, with the key words “Athletes” AND “Psychological effects” I found multiple interesting researches about the psychological effects of collegiate sports in female athletes such as stress, high levels of cortisol, low self-stem and eating disorders. This lead me to relate the goals of the group to the common problems among female athletes. Another interesting research that I found explained the most efficient way to approach athletes, which is by sharing a “shared understanding”. The sentiment of the shared understanding between a group of people that are similar between each other but different from most of the population (such as collegiate athletes) complements their view of the world and help them understand themselves better and not feel isolated towards their behaviors. This study applied perfectly to the goal of the group which I am apart of and helped complement my understanding about the paper I am writing on.
